Quotes from the book "The Four Agreements"

This interesting book exposed me to Toltec philosophy. It's always fascinating to know cultures and philosophies from across the world.

Here are some interesting quotes from the book "The Four Agreements" by Don Miguel Ruiz.

Dreaming is the main function of the mind, and the mind dreams 24 hours a day. It dreams when the brain is awake and it also dreams when the brain is asleep. The difference is that when the brain is awake, there is a material frame that makes us perceive things in a linear way.

We have a powerful memory. We make a mistake, we judge ourselves, we find ourselves guilty and we punish ourselves.

Your whole mind is fog, which Toltec called "mitote".

Nobody abuses us more than we abuse ourselves, and it is the judge, the Victim, and the belief system that makes us do this.

If someone abuses you a little more than you abuse yourself, you will probably walk away from that person. But if someone abuses you a little less than you abuse yourself, you will probably stay in the relationship and tolerate it endlessly.

We have the need to be accepted and to be loved by others, but we cannot accept and love ourselves.

The Four Agreements:

  • The first agreement is to be impeccable with your word. What other animal on the planet can speak? The word is the most powerful tool you have as a human. Whenever we hear an opinion and believe it, we make an agreement, and it becomes part of our belief system. Misery likes company. People who are suffering in hell don't want to be all alone. The human mind is a computer, gossip can be compared to a computer virus.
  • The second agreement is not to take anything personally. Immunity to poison in the middle of hell is the gift of this agreement. When you make it a strong habit not to take anything personally, you avoid many upsets in your life. Your anger, jealousy, and envy will disappear, and even your sadness will simply disappear if you don't take things personally.
  • The third agreement is don't make assumptions
  • The fourth agreement is to always do your best. People take action when they expect a reward, and they don't enjoy the action. And that's the reason why they don't do their best.
Today I will be impeccable with my word, I will not take anything personally, I will not make any assumptions, and I am going to do my best.

Keep your attention on today, and stay in the present moment. Just live one day at a time.

Three masteries lead people to become Toltec. First is the Mastery of Awareness. This is to be aware of who we really are, with all the possibilities. The second is the Mastery of Transformation - how to change, how to be free of domestication. The third is the Mastery of intent. The intent from the Toltect point of view is that part of life that makes the transformation of energy possible.

The Toltec believe that the parasite - the Judge, the Victim, and the belief system - has control of your mind; It controls your personal dream. It survives on the emotions that come from fear/anger and thrives on drama and suffering.

People call themselves Warriors because they are in a war against the parasite in the mind. That is the real meaning of a warrior.

Happiness is a choice, and so is suffering.
