Few quotes from the recent books

Here are few quotes from the books I read recently. You can find the collection of books I ready here  https://jnsuryaprakash.blogspot.com/2009/03/books-i-read.html .  Lord, protect me from my friends, I can take care of my enemies. Gratitude is a burden, revenge is a pleasure. Dead people receive more flower than the living ones because regret is stronger than gratitude. Never grab a sword by blade, always on the handle side. A wise man profits from enemies better than a fool from his friends. Thomas Alva Edison declined to share Nobel prize with Tesla in 1915, because he don't want Tesla to get recognition. Fools learn from their mistakes, greats learn from others mistakes. Changing the job is more like buying a house rather than buying a dress. Too many give up because there is too much give up around them. Think if it is positive humor or negative humor. You can do anything you want, but you have to believe yourself first. Hyper competitive - win all the times....

Here are some of the quotes from the books I read. Most of the quotes are from the book Range - David Epstein. If I had to single out one element in my life that has made a difference for me, it would be a passion to compete.  Sam Walton  Every human is work in progress claiming to be complete. Test and learn can be better strategy than plan and implement.  I know who I am when I see what I do. Virtually every good thing can be traced back to a misfortune. Hunger is more savage than sword. If you want to be a director of films, take a camera and shoot. - James Cameroon Continuous improvement is better than delayed perfection. You need not be engineer, you need to be producer. Producer should know what problems semi conductor can solve, need not be expert on semi conductor engineering.  It's difficult to make a prediction especially about the future. Experts are roughly as accurate as a dart throwing chimpanzee.  Best forecasters are genuinely curious a...

Some quotes from the earlier books I read: We know more than we can tell There are 2x10^270 possibilities in the game GO. More than atoms in universe.  Half the money I spent on advertising is wasted,  the trouble is I don't know which half. FB solved this problem. When compared, Cocaine is 20% of natural endorphin. The tallest oak in the forest was once a nut, who stood his ground. Strategy can not be created by committees. You are going to make mistake. The sin is to make same mistake twice. The best is to learn from others mistakes. If you take a penny and double it every day for next 30 days, you have more than 5million. People are endlessly complicated. During the 2nd world war US Air-force tried to train the pigeons to spot the bombing target for the bomber flights. It didn't work well, so they have to discard the program. Confirmation bias, endowment effect, halo effect. google it, pretty interesting. Similarity Judgements : when you give two things to a human, he ...

Quotes from the book "Think like a Monk" - Part I

Image
There is a series of 5 Blogposts about the quotes I collected from this book of Jay Shetty - "Think like a Monk". Out of 67 books I read so far this is my most favorite book till date.  If you want happiness for an hour - go sleep. If you want happiness for a day - go fishing. If you want happiness for a year - inherit wealth. if you want happiness for life - go help someone else. Helpers High and Givers Glory. A layperson who is consciously aiming to be continuously alive in the Now is a monk. In the last three thousand years humans haven't really changed. It is better to live your own destiny imperfectly than to live an imitation of somebody else's life with perfection - Bhagavad Gita 3.35 I am Not what I think I am , and I am not what you think I am, I am what I think you think I am - Charles Horton Cooley We live in a perception of a perception of ourselves, and we've lost our real selves as a result. When you try to live your most authentic life, some of your...

Quotes from the books I read

Time for few more quotes from the books I read. Mostly from Infinite games and Rising strong. When we die nobody will be declared as winner. In finite games there is a clear winner at the end of the duration based on metrics. In the infinite game, people drop out overtime but game lives on. Finite leaders look at metrics, infinite leader looks at continued inspiration. Finite games are seductive and addictive,  we must resist that urge. Kodak is the first company to introduce stock dividend. You can choose courage or comfort,  not both, not at the same time. Lot of seats in the arena filled with critics never ventured on the floor.  Knowledge is a rumor until it lives in the muscle memory.  - Indonesian Tribe Humans are feeling machines, that can think. You can change your life by charging thoughts, actions and feelings. When we know better, we do better. Expectations are resentments waiting to happen.  Vision without execution is hallucination. One liners

(Its all collection. By the way collection means stealing from more than one individual) Nothing shocks me. I'm a Software Engineer. One liners collected on Net: You don't get anything clean without getting something else dirty. Your secrets are safe with me and all my friends. Pick battles big enough to matter, small enough to win. If you're not confused, you're not paying attention. Unhappiness is best defined as the difference between our talents and our expectations. Economy in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it. Don't take life too seriously. You'll never get out of it alive. Until I was 18 I thought my name was 'Shutup'. You can go a long way with a smile. You can go a lot farther with a smile and a gun. Feedback is a business term which refers to the joy of criticizing other people's work. A crisis is when you can't say: "let's forget the whole thing...

Quotes from the book "The Almanack of Naval Ravikant" - Eric Jorgenson

Image
Here are some interesting quotes from the inspiring book "The Almanack of Naval Ravikant" By  Eric Jorgenson. Consider everything, but take nothing as gospel. Reading is faster than listening. Doing is faster than watching. Work as hard as you can. Even though who you work with and what you work on are more important than how hard you work. Intentions don't matter. Actions do. That's why being ethical is hard. If it entertains you now but will bore you someday, it's a distraction. keep looking. The less you want something, the less you think about it, the less you obsess over it, and the more you're going to do it naturally. If they can train you to do it, then eventually they will train a computer to do it. Products with no marginal cost of replication include books, media movies, and code. This is the highest form of leverage. Forget rich versus poor, white-collar versus blue. It's now leveraged versus un-leveraged. You're never going to get rich ren...

Quotes from the AI Book "You look like a Thing And I Love You" - Janelle shane

Image
Please don't be mislead by the title, its a book on AI. If you are wondering why the book is named like this, Author is a researcher trying to teach AI on generating "pick up lines". Thats the pickup line AI came up with 😀 . This is one of the best books I read so far on AI. Here are some quotes from the book: Programming an AI is almost more like teaching a child than programming a computer. The question AI is answering is not "what is the best solution?" but "What would the humans have done ?" The narrower the AI, the smarter it seems. The human brain is a neural network made of eighty-six billion neural networks. Most of the times, what we asked AI to do isn't what we actually wanted them to do. Give AI a goal - data to imitate or a reward function to maximize and they'll do it, whether or not they've actually solved your problem. On December 2017, Google maps directed cars toward neighborhoods that were on fire. It wan't trying to ...

Part I - Quotes from book "Tribe of Mentors"

Image
This is one of the biggest books I ever read and also the best. Here are few quotes that hit me from the book "Tribe of Mentors" - Tim Ferriss. Pain is never out of season if you go shopping for it. Life punishes the vague wish and rewards the specific ask. The stupidity of people comes from having an answer for everything. The wisdom of the novel comes form having a question for everything. You don't success because you have no weaknesses; you succeed because you find your unique strengths and focus on the developing habits around them. Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one's courage. The disease of our times is that we live on the surface. We're like the platter River, a mile wide and an inch deep. Not dead, can't quit. He had his employees rate new candidates on a scale of 1-10. The only stipulation was they couldn't choose 7. Intelligence is like following a GPS route right into a body of water until you drown. Wisdom looks at the route but, whe...

Quotes from the books I read

Most of the quotes are from the books "Elon Musk" and "Start with Why". I think there are too many smart people pursuing internet stuff, finance and Law. That is part of the reason why we haven't seen as much innovation. The best minds of our generation are thinking about how to make people click ads, that sucks. Innovation is a finite resource,  the probability of finding another top 100 type Innovation is getting thinner. The proven way to handle crime in NY subways was, control graffiti and fare beating. Think simple. Convictions of your heart, content of your thought are less important in guiding your action, than the immediate context. Peer influence and community influence more important than genes. The longer you wait to fire someone, the longer it has been since you should have fired them - Elon Musk Elon's biggest enemy is himself and the way he treats people. One good engineer is better than 3 above average one's. MLK gave  I have a dream speec...

Quotes from the book "Radical Compassion"

Image
This is one of those great books by Tara Barch. You may not be able to connect to it completely but you know you need this. In this book, she discusses RAIN (Recognize, Allow, Investigate, and Nurture (non-identification)). RAIN can interrupt the cutoff state I call "Living in a trance". Do not try to save the whole world or do anything grandiose. Instead, create a clearing in the dense forest of your life. Trance Presence Unconscious-below the line Conscious-above the line Asleep, in a dream Wakeful, lucid, aware Caught or possessed by emotions Emotions witnessed mindfully Dissociated In contact with feelings Heart-defended or numb Heart-caring and tender Reactive to experiences Responsive to experiences Grasping or resisting Balanced, open, and discerning Whenever that trance of emotions appears acknowledge like Buddha by saying "I see you, Mara... Let's have tea" Neuroplasticity: Neurons that fire together, wire together While allowing doesn't necessarily...

Quotes from the book " The 10X rule "

Image
This is pretty interesting book from Grant Cardone, It took some time for me to get convinced to the point author is making but half way through the book I am convinced. Here are some quotes that hit me. Anyone that suggest to me to do less is either not a real friend or very confused. Your thoughts and actions are the reason why you are where you are right now. Success is the degree or measure of attaining some desired object or end. Once you attain this end, the issue is whether you can maintain, multiply and repeat your actions. This isn't about attaining one goal one time but rather about what we can persist in creating. A person who limits his or her potential success will limit what he or she will do to create it and keep it. Mankind seems to have this built-in, automatic calculator whose only purpose is to explain away failure. "In it to win it whatever it takes"  mind set. Sound too aggressive? sorry, but that is the outlook required to win nowadays. The harder I ...
