Miscellaneous Quotes

This collection of quotes made me pause for a moment. Thinking is an excellent servant and terrible master. Money is like gas on a road trip, you don't want to run out of gas. But at the same time, you are not doing a tour of gas stations. Suffering = pain X resistance Rain philosophy = (Recognize, Allow, Investigate, Nurture) What you resist persists. If you have one foot in the future and one foot in the past, you are pissing on the present. Not my will but the hearts will be done. Let go what goes, let come what comes, let remain what remains. I am not ok, you are not ok, that's ok. Two great disappointments in life, not getting what you want and getting what you want. Simple, patience, and compassion are the real values. When a person doesn't have any problem, the mind invents them. Are you self-aware to ask yourself WHY, when you are emotional? Whats your value system? What are metrics? Hiroo Onoda : A Soldier never surrendered. Read the link, very interesting story. ...

Miscellaneous Quotes

Here is a collection of quotes that made me stop and think for a moment. Amateurs have a goal. Professionals have a system. Focus on doing the best consistently, that is more valuable than being the best in the room, your energy will be deviated with the defense and offense you need to play to prove in the later case. DunnKruger effect and imposter syndrome: The Dunning-Kruger effect is a cognitive bias that occurs when people with limited knowledge or competence in a specific area overestimate their abilities. Imposter syndrome is when you doubt your own skills and successes. You feel you're not as talented or worthy as others believe, and you're scared that one day, people will realize that. Arrogance = Ignorance + conviction Preacher, Prosecutor and Politician: As we think and talk, we often slip into the mindsets of three different professions: preachers, prosecutors, and politicians. In each of these modes, we take on a particular identity and use a distinct set of tools. ...

Quotes from the book "The Four Agreements"

Image
This interesting book exposed me to Toltec philosophy. It's always fascinating to know cultures and philosophies from across the world. Here are some interesting quotes from the book "The Four Agreements" by Don Miguel Ruiz. Dreaming is the main function of the mind, and the mind dreams 24 hours a day. It dreams when the brain is awake and it also dreams when the brain is asleep. The difference is that when the brain is awake, there is a material frame that makes us perceive things in a linear way. We have a powerful memory. We make a mistake, we judge ourselves, we find ourselves guilty and we punish ourselves. Your whole mind is fog, which Toltec called "mitote". Nobody abuses us more than we abuse ourselves, and it is the judge, the Victim, and the belief system that makes us do this. If someone abuses you a little more than you abuse yourself, you will probably walk away from that person. But if someone abuses you a little less than you abuse yourself, you w...

Miscellaneous quotes and collected thoughts

Image
Here are some collected thoughts and quotes I grabbed overtime from different places. “The cold water doesn't get warmer if you jump late.”  “You don't need more intensity; you need more consistency. Intensity impresses; consistency transforms.” “We want the outcome, but we need the journey." Your body reflects what you eat. Your mind reflects what you consume.  For a healthy body, choose whole foods. For a sharp mind, choose lasting knowledge.  “Being powerful is like being a lady. If you have to tell people you are, you aren’t.” It is not necessary to agree on everything in order to show kindness. Calm silence, sincerity, and courteous words, whether one is agreeing or disagreeing with others, mark the person who knows how to behave. “Courage is knowing it might hurt, and doing it anyway. Stupidity is the same. And that's why life is hard.”  — Jeremy Goldberg  “Things turn out best for the people who make the best of the way things turn out.” So much can be ac...

Quotes from the book " God Human Animal Machine"

Image
This is a fascinating book by Meghan O'Gieblyn. This mixes philosophy, spirituality, theology, Artificial Intelligence, and human thought evaluation. Here are a few interesting quotes from the book that struck me. The actual molecules of water change every millisecond, but the pattern persists for hours or even years. Our new digital selves will entirely lack subjective experience, the phenomenon we most often associate with words like "spirit" and "soul". Intelligence is in the eye of the observer. Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. Selfish conduct is rooted in the belief that we are wholly separate and distinct individuals. We must abandon the idea, that humans are at the center of the ethical universe and bestow value on the rest of the natural world only insofar as it suits humanity's ends. Saying about philosophers: "One starts as a materialist, then one becomes a dualist, then a panpsychist, and one ends up ...

Quotes from the book "Hello World - Hannah Fry"

Image
Hello World by Hannah Fry is a captivating read. Here are some thought-provoking quotes from the book. No object or algorithm is ever either good or evil in itself. It's how they're used that matters. GPS was invented to launch nuclear missiles and now helps deliver pizzas. Pop music, played on repeat has been deployed as torture device.  Psychologists have been using a system of five characteristics to quantify an individual's personality. You get a score on each of the following traits: openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism. Collectively, they offer a standard and useful way to describe what kind of a person you are. In the United States spending a year in a high-security prison can cost about the same as going to Harvard. At this point AI is better at spotting Breast cancer than Humans and the pigeons are better than AI (in particular types of cancers). Refining an algorithm often means making a choice between sensitivity ...

Quotes from "Burn Book -Kara Swisher"

Image
Here are some interesting quotes from Kara Swisher's memoir "Burn Book". I leave you to your own devices...I mean that; your phone is the best relationship you all have now, the first thing you pick up in the morning and the last thing you touch at night. You invent the plane, you also invent the plane crash; and when you invent electricity, you invent electrocution... Every technology carries its own negativity, which is invented at the same time as technical progress. "You are nobody if you are are not somebody.com" was the saying in early .com days. Storytelling is trying to come up with an idea that is insightful in terms of giving you a different insight into how things work or is amusing. Between speech and truth, he chose speech. Between speed and perfection, he chose speed. Between scale and safety, the chose scale. Tech has always been a mirrortocracy, full of people who liked their own reflection so much that they only saw value in those that looked th...

Quotes from the book "A Hacker's Mind" By Bruce Schneier

Image
Here is another great book I read recently "A Hacker's Mind" By Bruce Schneier. It is really interesting, here are some quotes I liked from this book. When most people look at a system, they focus on how it works. When security technologists look at the same system, they can't help but focus on how it can be made to fail. That's what a hack is: an activity allowed by the system that subverts the goal or intent of the system. "Is that allowed" and "I didn't know you could do that" are both common reactions to hacks. Double Irish with a Dutch Sandwich is a tax evasion technique someone invented and a lot of companies used to avoid Billions of dollars in taxes across different countries. Estimates are that US companies avoided paying nearly $200 billion in US taxes in 2017 alone, at the expense of everyone else. A hack follows the letter of a system's rules but violates their spirit and intent. No matter how locked-down a system is, vulner...

Quotes from the book "AI Super Powers" - Kai Fu Lee

Image
Here are some thought-provoking quotes from the book " AI Super-powers" by Kai-Fu Lee Artificial Intelligence is the elucidation of the human learning process, the quantification of the human thinking process, the explication of human behavior, and the understanding of what makes intelligence possible. Neural networks require large amounts of two things: Computing power and data. Harnessing the power of AI today - the "electricity" of the twenty-first century - requires four analogous inputs: abundant data, hungry entrepreneurs, AI scientists, and an AI-friendly policy environment. Kai-Fu Lee Predicts that within 15 years, AI will technically be able to replace around 40%-50% of jobs in the US. 47% of US jobs could be automated within the next decade or two. Instead of being mission-driven(like US entrepreneurs), Chinese companies are first and foremost market-driven. Their ultimate goal is to make money. Chinese companies invest in depth (they own end-to-end busine...

Quotes from the book "The Coming Wave"

Image
Here are some quotes from the book "The Coming Wave" by Mustafa Suleyman and Michael Bhaskar. For the context Mustafa Suleyman is CEO of Microsoft AI , co-founder of DeepMind and Inflection AI. Waves Follow a single seemingly immutable law: it gets cheaper and easier to use and ultimately it proliferates, far and wide. The coming wave is defined by two core technologies: AI and synthetic biology. Uber was impossible without the smart-phone, which itself was enabled by GPS, which was enabled by satellites, which were enabled by rockets, which were enabled by combustion techniques, which were enabled by language and fire. Technologies are ideas, and ideas cannot be eliminated. What if we could grow what we wanted locally? what if our supply chain was just biology? If AI represents the automation of information, robotics is the automation of the material. (Life + Intelligence) X Energy - Modern Civilization. The Leader in AI "will become the ruler of the world". The id...

Quotes from the book "Man's Search for meaning"

Image
Quotes from Viktor E Frankl's book of "Man's Search for Meaning". He who has a Why to live for can bear almost any HOW. Yes, a man can get used to anything. An abnormal reaction to an abnormal situation is normal behavior. Humor was another of the soul's weapons in the fight for self-preservation. He who has a why to live for can bear with almost any how. Live as if you were living already for the second time and as if you had acted the first time as wrongly as you are about to act now. Suffering ceases to be suffering at the moment it finds a meaning, such as the meaning of a sacrifice. Logotherapy bases its technique called "paradoxical intention" on the twofold fact that fear brings about that which one is afraid of and that hyper-intention makes impossible what one wishes. The cue to cure is self-transcendence. Nothingbutness: Man is nothing but the result of biological, psychological and sociological conditions or the product of heredity and environ...

Quotes from the book "The Daily Stoic"

Image
Here are some quotes from the great book "The Daily Stoic" - Ryan Holiday and Stephen Hanselman. If you like these quotes, you must pick up the book. Stoicism is a way of life (logics+ethics), our ability to use our reason to choose how we respond and reorient ourselves to external events. It's ultimately framed around The discipline of perception : how we see the world around us The discipline of Action : The decisions and actions we take The discipline of will : How we deal with things we can NOT change. Contrl your perceptions. Direct your actions properly. willingly accept what's outside your control. That's all we need to do. If you want to be steady, if you want clarity, proper judgment is the best way. You've got just one thing to manage: Your choices, your will, your mind. So mind it. Man is pushed by drives but pulled by values. Find what you do out of rote memory or routine. Ask yourself: Is this really the best way to do it? Money only marginally ch...

Quotes from the book "When things fall apart" - Pema Chodron

Image
Quotes from the book 'When Things Fall Apart' by Pema Chödrön." Fear is a natural reaction to moving closer to the truth. Am I going to add to the aggression in the world ? Am I Going to practice peace, or am I going to war? This very moment is the perfect teacher, and, lucky for us, it's with us wherever we are. Bring our minds back home. Meditation is the willingness to die over and over again. Because of mindfulness, we see our desires and our aggression, our jealousy, and our ignorance. We don't act on them; we just see them. Without mindfulness, we don't see them. Mindfulness is the ground; refraining is the path. Four pairs of opposites - pleasure and pain, loss and gain, fame and disgrace, and praise and blame - is what keeps us stuck in the pain of samsara. One can be lonely and not be tossed away by it. We can just be lonely with no alternatives, content to be right here with the mood and texture of what's happening. If you want to find the meani...

Quotes from the book "An autobiography of A Yogi - Paramahansa Yogananda"

Image
This book was recommended by multiple folks, it helps if you are on the journey of meditation and Yoga. If you are on a spiritual journey it will help you more !!! A few quotes that hit me are here: In shallow men, the fish of little thoughts cause much commotion. In oceanic minds, the whales of inspiration make hardly a ruffle. He is a fool who cannot conceal his wisdom. The vanished lives of all men are dark with many shames. Human conduct is ever unreliable until anchored in the divine. Everything in the future will improve if you are making a spiritual effort now. Good manners without sincerity are like a beautiful dead lady. Straightforwardness without civility is like a surgeon's knife, effective but unpleasant. Candor with courtesy is helpful and admirable. What a person imagines he hears. Roam in the world as a lion of self-control; see that the frogs of weakness don't kick you around. Some people try to be tall by cutting off the heads of others. Hidden in the deep of ...

Quotes from the book "Physics of the future"

Image
Quotes from the book "Physics of the future" by Michio Kaku. This is really interesting forward looking book. here are some quotes that I loved from it. Empires of the future will be empires of the mind - winston churchill The future is already here. It's just unevenly distributed. In 1899, Charles H. Duell, commissioner of the US office of patents said "Everything that can be invented has been invented" In 1927, Harr M warner one of the founders of Warner Brothers, remarked during the era of silent movies, "Who the hell wants to hear actors talk?" Thomas Watson, chairman of IBM, said in 1943, "I think there is a world market for maybe five computers". Four fundamental forces in nature that drive the entire univers. Force of Gravity Electromagnetic force 3rd and 4th forces to be understood were the two nuclear forces the weak and strong forces. Our wants, dreams, personalities, and desires have probably not changed much in 100,000 years. Ever...

Quotes from the book "The Power of Now" By Eckhart Tolle

Image
The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment.  Reading this book gives you insights into how to achieve inner peace. Here are some quotes that hit me. Buddha's simple definition of enlightenment is "The end of suffering" It is not so much that you use your mind wrongly - you usually don't use it at all. It uses you. This is the disease. Can you be free of your mind whenever you want to? Have you found the "off" button? Compulsive thinking is actually an addiction. The present moment holds the key to liberation. But you cannot find the present moment as long as you are in your mind. Emotion: The body's reaction to your mind. Make it a habit to ask yourself: What's going on inside me at this moment? Am I at ease at this moment? is a good question to ask yourself frequently.  There are two levels to your pain: the pain that you create now, and the pain from the past that still lives on in your mind and body. Ceasing to create pain in the present...

Quotes from the book "Master Algorithm" by Pedro Domingos

Image
Five tribes: Domingo divides the field into five contemporary machine-learning paradigms- Evolutionary algorithms, connectionism and neural networks, symbolism, Bayes networks, and analogical reasoning- which he imagines being unified in one future "master algorithm" capable of learning nearly anything. Here are a few quotes that hit me. Computers are useless, they can only give you answers. If what you tell them to do is be creative, you get machine learning. Homo Sapiens is the species that adapts the world to itself instead of adapting itself to the world. Machine learning is the newest chapter in this million-year saga: with it, the world senses what you want and changes accordingly, without you having to lift a finger. Finding correlation is to machine learning no more than bricks are to houses, and people don't live in bricks. If every algorithm suddenly stopped working, it would be the end of the world as we know it. Michelangelo said that all he did was see the st...
