Data Analytics Organization

All the companies realized the value of data and have some kind of data organization within their org structures. But what is the ideal data organization for your organization?

First thing first, what kind of company are you ?

If you are Tech product based company, you should have analytics as part of the product and feedback loop. you should have product Eco-system embedded with analytics driving the features, insights about usage and customer demands. So analytics is key pillar of the product. so your Innovatin executive can own the data organization in my opinion. so they can drive sales, experience and product Eco-system.

If you are non-tech product based company, Analytics are more useful for the company rather than the clients. you still should have data collected through the life cycle of the product. This can be important service offering for the customer. In my opinion the data organization can live under product executive to drive metrics and KPI's.

If you are eCommerce or next gen company, Data Analytics is the brain trust of your company. So it should be distributed like nerves and governed like brain. Every part of the organization should have analytics. everything is a number game. Site traffic, marketing, sales, customer satisfaction, A/B testing, inventory, delivery etc., In these kind of companies, I imagine analytics organization at every department head level, Central data lake owned by Chief Data Officer level.

If you are traditional retail, health care, Oil & Gas, Financial, Telecom company then, analytics should be part of each operational level reporting to division head. As it is traditional big company data lake is more of dream they need to pursue as part of their multi year plan. But they can start leveraging visual and business analytics to drive decisions in their respective orgs with big data tools in the meanwhile.

In my view, there are two things in play here. Big data engineering team, ETLing the data and generating data lake, governance. Business analytics teams responsible for leveraging the data lake and driving every day business decisions, insights and size of the prize. Data democracy is the way to go. your CEO and new intern should have same level of data access excluding competitive and privileged information.

There is no right or wrong way, before building the org look at skill set, tool set and mind set. you define the org, roles and then try to fit the people in. Don't start by people in mind, then you will be fitting the org to the egos. Your org structure should be agile enough to adapt change. Data and Analytics team should always report to product/operational owner who has end to end responsibility otherwise there is NO use.
