Work culture in next decade

Lot of companies are forced to allow work from home due to COVID situation. Many of these companies are the one's hesitating employees going away from offices. Some of these lessons learned by companies/employees will definitely shape up the future behaviors differently.

Lets look at some stats about working from home:

  • We have around 12 million tech employees in US, they can easily work from home.
  • As per 2020 stats, 5 million employees are permanently Working From Home. That is 3.6% of entire US workforce.
  • There is a possibility 43% employees can work from home in the total US workforce
  • There are at least 10 states in US that already have around 5% population working from home like California, Texas, Washington,  New York, Virginia, Florida etc.,
  • Twitter, Square, Facebook (50%), Walmart Tech etc., are taking big strides towards work from home FOREVER.
  • There are legal, compliance, tax and immigration implications for any work from home decision. We know rules will always evolve after the trends become common knowledge.
  • There is a another concept called Work From Anywhere which is already part of companies like SAP and Akamai. Imagine you are going and spending a month in Hawaii and working from home there for the first 3 weeks and vacation last week.
  • 2015 study of Travel agency call center division saw 13% increase in productivity after working from home.
The change in Work from home culture will definitely bring change in gentrification. Which is needed to make some of the US cities livable and to spread the growth equally. Factors that can impact choice of place for their permanent work from home option can be livability status of a place, Weather , Quality of life, employment, education, Safety etc.,

This change will definitely come down with lot of impacts for business and individuals. Both positively and negatively. Corporate Coffee shops like Starbucks may have to re-invent their business model. people may be able to cook home more frequently, I am assuming this will have positive impact on health and negative impact on businesses. Lunch meetings/team lunches will still continue as a collaboration opportunity. More online collaboration tools will emerge and employers need to watch out for employee mental health.

Some of these impacts will have long lasting effect on people behavior and some of it will be back to normal. It will be interesting to observe the next decade to see these patterns emerge. As always NOT the companies with the best plan, the companies with the agility in their plan will win the next decade.
