Quotes from the book "The art of winning" - Bill Belichik

A fascinating NFL coach, Bill Belichick, wrote this book, and it's worth reading.

Make sure to prioritise the major points for a successful process, and don't waste time and energy on stuff that doesn't really move the needle. A successful process depends on ignoring the noise.

To help them focus on what matters, I like to tell my players and coaches to think about "the drawer". Whether real or imagined, the drawer is the place where they can put every nonessential task.

Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them. The only one that matters is the middle.

In the 1,526 singles matches Roger Federer played in his career, He won almost 80% of those matches.... What % of points do you think he won in those matches? Only 54%. In other words, even top-ranked tennis players win barely more than half of the points they play.

One good outcome doesn't mean anything. The only success that matters is sustained success. Embrace dissatisfaction.

Building your team, two priorities are at the very top.

  1.     Knowing what you want.
  2.     Superbly evaluating what you already have

When things are not going well, or you want to be in a better position, I have 3 pieces of advice

  2. Understand what you need to do to improve the situation
  3. Take positive steps to effect change.
Ray Dalio's 5-step process for achieving goals, as outlined in his book "Principles", involves identifying clear goals, encountering and diagnosing problems, designing solutions, and then doing the work to implement those solutions. This cyclical process emphasizes learning from mistakes and continuously improving to reach one's objectives

Most importantly, taking accountability solves the problem.

An employee who doesn't take responsibility for anything that goes wrong will never garner the respect to be a good leader.

Time is only good if you use it.

Eisenhower's famous quote about planning: "Plans are useless, but planning is indispensable". In other words, if you have a plan, you might lose. But if you don't have a plan, you will definitely lose. Pick your path.

If you have a good plan and consistently follow it, you have a chance for success regardless of what comes your way.

When you enter Patriot's facility, you read four lines:
  • Do you job
  • Work hard
  • Be attentive
  • Put the team first
When you left the facility, the opposite side of the sign read:
  • Ignore the noise
  • manage expectations
  • Speak for yourself
  • Don't believe or fuel the hype
Tom Brady's leadership model is "Ship/Shiptmate/self". Bill modified it to "Put the team first, then your teammate, and finally yourself".

Happy Reading !!!
