India as a Soft Power

I watched Shashi Tharoor speech on India as a Soft Power, I liked it and here are some things which caught my attention.

Elephent (India) and Tiger(China) are becoming next world power. We have worlds 4th largest Army. We will overtake china by 2034 in Population, becoming worlds number 1 in population. We have 5th largest economy in the world. We are growing constantly at 6.7%, when worlds largest economies are shrinking. Somehow this is not adding up to the soft power.

Hollywood, Pepsi, Coke, McDonald's helped America become a soft power. They have done more than American Govt in making US soft power.

Countries are judged on the popularity, communication, information, branding as soft power. We are larger than US in terms of Telecommunications. Once in India there was 8 years long wait time to get telephone connection. Now we are selling 15 million cell phones a year.

Bollywood is slowly crawling to world cinema. "Kyon ki saas bhi kabhi bahu thi" is dubbed into Afghan language and it is the most popular TV show at 8.30 PM in Afghanistan. Weddings interrupted and robberies went up, as people are watching TV, thief's are taking cars and other external things. Ayurveda and Yoga are dominating worlds culture.

India is now identified as Software Guru, Mathematical Genius. Watch more at the below link.
